The engineering brief should describe the required good packs at the end of the line, not only the cycle rate of individual machines. Product behaviour, component quality, replenishment, changeovers, inspection and short stops all affect the sustainable result. The line should therefore be balanced around the real production calendar and a defined operating margin.

Start with evidence

Provide representative product, containers, closures, labels and secondary packaging from the approved range. Include the most difficult combinations, dimensional tolerances and any temperature or storage conditions that change behaviour.

Premade pouches support premium formats and smaller runs; form-fill-seal can suit higher-volume standard packs. The commercial answer depends on material, speed and changeover requirements.

Can pouches be filled with liquids and powders?

Yes, using different dosing and sealing arrangements. The product and risk of contaminating the seal area are key.

How is seal quality checked?

Define the seal-control evidence

A sealing recipe is meaningful only when the material, contamination risk, machine condition and test method are known.

  • Identify the approved pouch or film construction and supplier revision rather than relying on a generic material name.
  • Record the sealing method and the controlled variables available on the proposed equipment.
  • Trial the approved product at the seal area risk condition, including dust, splash, stringing or trapped particles where relevant.
  • Define seal inspection or integrity checks, sampling frequency and the treatment of warm seals before testing.
  • Check restart after stops and the first packs after material replenishment or recipe selection.
  • Agree the reject, quarantine and line-clearance route for suspect pouches or coding errors.

Should pouch seal settings be copied from another machine?

No. Material, jaw or band design, pressure, dwell, speed, contamination and cooling can differ. Establish the approved window on the proposed process using production-intent material and an agreed test method.

Why do pouches need support during filling?

Flexible packs can move, collapse or change their opening geometry as product enters. The support method should protect dose placement, seal cleanliness and consistent discharge.

Can premade and reel-fed pouches run on the same line?

They normally require materially different forming or presentation equipment. A common downstream route may be possible, but each pack-making and filling boundary should be assessed separately.
