Scope and selection

What information is needed to specify a packaging line?

How is line speed selected?

Can one line handle many formats?

Often, within a controlled range. Every container, closure, label and case combination should be listed so tooling, settings and changeover work are understood.

Automation and integration

Should the line be semi-automatic or automatic?

Compare demand, batch size, labour, ergonomic risk, quality, changeovers, footprint, capital and growth rather than using rated speed alone.

Can existing machines be retained?

Potentially, after a survey checks condition, performance, working height, controls, guarding, documentation and supportability.

Why are conveyors and accumulation important?

They control transfer, spacing and short-stop recovery. Poorly designed connections can limit the line even when individual machines are capable.

Can line data be collected?

Counters, recipes, downtime reasons, reject data and factory-system interfaces can be included when the required architecture and ownership are defined.

Testing and delivery

What is FAT?

Factory acceptance testing checks agreed functions, formats, quality and performance before dispatch using a controlled protocol.

What is SAT?

Site acceptance testing verifies the installed system, site utilities, interfaces and agreed performance in the production environment.

Who supplies trial materials?

The project plan should name who supplies product, containers, closures, labels, cases and consumables, including quantities and delivery dates.

What should operator training cover?

Safe operation, startup, shutdown, replenishment, changeover, cleaning, first-off checks, routine care and basic fault response.
